چکیده

Background—Although non-diphtherial corynebacteria are ubiquitous in nature and commonly colonise the skin and mucous membranes of humans, they rarely account for clinical infection. Methods and results—10 patients with unilateral conjunctivitis are described in which Corynebacterium macginleyi was isolated. This species has only recently been reported to be exclusively isolated form ocular surfaces. C macginleyi was uniformly susceptible to topical antibiotics commonly used in ophthalmology. Conclusion—Despite the fact that the pathogenicity of C macginleyi is not yet assured, this micro-organism should be recognised as a potential cause of bacterial superinfections. Appropriate antibiotic therapy leads to its elimination and resolution of the conjunctivitis. (Br J Ophthalmol 2000;84:1420–1422) Bacterial conjunctivitis makes up a small percentage of all conjunctividitis, accounting for less than 10% of all clinically apparent

Corynebacterium macginleyi isolated from a corneal ulcer

We report the isolation of Corynebacterium macginleyi from the corneal ulcer culture of a patient, later enrolled in the Steroids for Corneal Ulcer Trial (SCUT). To our knowledge this is the first published report from North America of the recovery of C. macginleyi from a serious ocular infection.

Corynebacterium macginleyi has to date been isolated exclusively from conjunctival swabs.

Fifteen strains of Corynebacterium macginleyi were exclusively isolated from conjunctival swabs of patients with either conjunctivitis or corneal ulcers. Up to now, only three C. macginleyi strains had been described in the literature. The characteristics of the 15 patients from whom C. macginleyi was isolated are outlined, characteristics useful for the identification of C. macginleyi are desc...

High-level fluoroquinolone resistance in ophthalmic clinical isolates belonging to the species Corynebacterium macginleyi.

The clinical importance of nondiphtherial Corynebacterium, a ubiquitous member of the normal human microflora of the skin and mucous membrane, for ocular surface infections has been recognized recently. We performed an antimicrobial susceptibility test with Etest strips for three fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and levofloxacin) and a taxonomic analysis on 21 isolates of Corynebac...

Corynebacterium macginleyi: A cause of ventilator associated pneumonia in an immunocompromised patient

PURPOSE AND IMPORTANCE Corynebacterium macginleyi, a lipophilic diphtheroid from the genus Corynebacteria, is a known cause of conjunctivitis. It was recently reported as a cause of serious infections in immunocompromised individuals. It has never been reported as a cause of ventilator-associated pneumonia, that which carries a high burden and risk of mortality. Our report intends to increase a...
